Summer in Skopje
Skopje’s hot and warm summer is already here and the sunny weather brings back lots of the outdoor social activities. Summer in Skopje is all about going out for picnics in the parks, nature hikes or going for ice-cream and dining on the restaurants terraces.
The sunny days brings a lot of joy and fun, but summers in Skopje can be very hot and dry with temperatures going way above 30 degrees Celsius, especially in July and August. Light clothes and sun protection during the day is much recommended.
On very hot days locals tend to avoid the city center by looking for refreshment and fresh air on the local nature spots like the top of Vodno Mountain (Millennium Cross), St. Pantelejmon monastery and the nearby Macedonian village ethno complex, the canyon Matka or the City Park. Also popular way to survive a hot day in Skopje is with cold drink in your hand, in one of the many coffee places and bars in town.
In the evenings, the city comes to life and the streets are crowded with people searching for fun. Regardless whether for concerts or film showings, in Skopje there is always the right stage outside. For the party rockers, summer time is ‘open season’ so many parties are held to take advantage of the fine weather.
If you’re visiting Skopje with your kids, they will appreciate a trip by the cable car from the Sredno Vodno up to the top of mountain Vodno, where the Millennium Cross stands erect above the city. There are some shops selling drinks and snacks nearby and nice children playground with tables around it. Other places where children will definitely enjoy are the Skopje City Zoo and the City Park. Next to the Stone Bridge is the old-fashioned looking carousel which is a hit with young children. Nearby the carousel, there is couple of restaurants that have a small playground in between their terraces, which might be just what you need to enjoy a quiet mom and dad meal.
For those who don’t want to give up sports even on a holiday, Skopje has great opportunities for outdoor recreation. You can go for jogging or roller skate on the banks of river Vardar, go paragliding from the top of Vodno Mountain or go for kayaking in the canyon Matka. If you like mount biking, Macedonia is a great country to practice it and Skopje has many off-road and dirt tracks in the surrounding mountains. Also occasionally, cross city rides on bicycles are organizing a city ride, with some of the city streets being closed for cars. The routes and starting points change, so you’d better check where to start on their facebook page if you wish to join.
Of course, on a hot day in the city a good open-air swim might come as a relief and delight. Try out one of Skopje’s swimming pools – Aqua Park, Biser, Karposh or Olympic pool.
The summer is also a time to remember the city’s history, which brings back the memory of the devastated earthquake that hit the city on 26th of July 1963 and the countries from around the world that help in rebuilding the city. Worth to mention that the international assistance following the earthquake led to Skopje being known as the ‘City of International Solidarity.’
